Summer Skincare Essentials

The sun is shining, and we are gradually coming out of lockdown #goodtimesahead.

With the uplifting change in weather, it is important that we tweak our skincare routines. Here is a list of products that will help you throughout the warm summer days.

1. SPF

Sun protection is the most important step in your daily skincare routine and is crucial for healthy skin. It is needed throughout the year but even more so in summer.

The sun’s harmful UV rays cause ageing, wrinkles, and brown spots so SPF is a necessity.  The SPF in your foundation isn’t enough, so make sure to invest in a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Apply the SPF as the last step in your skincare routine. Give it time to absorb before applying makeup. SPF is not a highlighter; I’m looking at you Gwyneth Paltrow.

I really like the Thank You Farmer Sun Project Light Sun Essence SPF 50+ available at Tonic15 for £21. It has a lovely light texture on the skin and no white residue.

2. A spritz of face mist

I think face mists are underrated. They are a very versatile product. Face mists can be used in your skincare routine before or after applying a face mask, and as a quick little pick-me-up for instant hydration during the day. For an extra refreshing and even more cooling effect keep your face mists in the fridge.

I am currently loving these two face mists from SanDaWha - a vegan and cruelty-free brand.  SanDaWha Camellia Flower Hydrating Mist & SanDaWha Camellia Brightening Oil Mist. Available for £13.25 each.

3. Aloe Vera to cool the skin

If you’ve ever had sunburn or the heat has irritated your skin, you know that Aloe Vera is a must-have skincare product. It has anti-inflammatory properties and helps soothe and calm irritated skin. Aloe Vera is a great all-round product that can be used on sensitive skin. It also works wonders on burns, cuts, and other injuries. Aloe Vera Gel is great for a dry or irritated scalp. Massage it onto the scalp and leave it on as a treatment to soothe and moisturize.

The one I use is from the Korean skincare brand Aromatica which is available at Tonic15 for £15. I usually have the mini one to hand for any skincare emergencies.

4. No cake face – BB/CC Creams

I have oily skin and in summer the idea of applying a full coverage foundation is simply a big no-no for me. I feel like the makeup just slips off my face. For a lighter alternative opt for a BB or CC Cream. They are beneficial for the skin and provide a light feeling, natural coverage. I really like IT Cosmetics, Your skin but better CC+ Oil-free matte with SPF 40, £32.50.

5. Clay mask for a deep cleanse

As your skin might be producing more natural oils in the warmer weather it’s always good to add in a clay mask for a deep cleanse. Be sure to follow it with a moisturizer. I really like the AXIS-Y Mugwort Pore Clarifying Wash-off Pack. It is packed with the skin-loving ingredient Mugwort, which helps to soothe skin and calm down breakouts. It is available from Skinlibrary for £22.50.

6. Micellar Water - a great all-rounder

I personally love Micellar Water. I use it as a second cleanser and it really helps to pick up any residue that my wash-off cleanser misses. It also helps to clarify the skin and it’s one of those products that’s always a staple in my skincare routine. My favourite Micellar Water of all time must be the Bioderma Sensibo Micellar Water. I have tried a couple and always come back to this one. You can pick this up from FEELUNIQUE for £11.

7. Body Scrub for silky smooth skin

An effective body scrub will do wonders for your summer skincare routine. It helps to exfoliate dead skin cells, remove toxins, and helps to stop pores from getting clogged while diminishing ingrown hairs. I really liked the Primark Vanilla and Brown Sugar Scrub, but they currently have a creamy Coconut Scrub for only £3.

8. Say no to ingrown hairs

For me, summertime means hair removal galore. A physical scrub can be useful, but if you need something stronger for those pesky red bumps be sure to try Skin Doctors Ingrown Go. It is a potent formula that helps exfoliate the skin to release trapped hair. It combats existing ingrown hairs and helps to stop new ones from forming. It is safe to use anywhere on your body, legs, bikini line, underarms, basically anywhere razor bumps can appear. I have used this product and it really helped, giving me results in as little as 24 hours. Available to purchase from FEELUNIQUE for £12.99.
